The Penny Parker Megapack 15 Complete Novels edition by Mildred Benson Mildred A Wirt Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

This is some of the most enjoyable vintage young adult adventure-mystery fiction. The heroine is the 16 year old only daughter of a widowed newspaper editor in a fictional smaller mid western city in the US. She is plucky, independent intelligent, loyal, inquisitive, honourable and impulsive - a great heroine and detective. She drives her own car, Leaping Lena, and gets about freely. The plots are exciting and fast paced. The characters are nicely drawn. The writing is excellent.

What makes the Penny Parker novels fresh and different is Penny's connection to the Riverview Star, the newspaper edited by her father. The author was a lifetime newspaper woman - she had ink in her veins. She gives us an authentic feel for adventures set in the heyday of print media. The reporters, photographers and editors of the newspaper are continuing characters alongside Penny. Penny's friendship and later (chaste) romance with ace reporter Jerry Livingston develops over the series. The series was written between 1939 and 1947. The mysteries in books 9 to 14 are set during World War Two and involve themes like sabotage and espionage.

The author, Mildred Wirt (also known by her other married name Mildred Benson) is great writer in this genre. This is her best work and her favourite heroine. She also wrote a lot of the early Nancy Drew books. A lot of her writing was for series published by the Strathemeyer syndicate. The syndicate set the framework for the character and the plots. The Penny Parker novels were fully Mildred's own.

This megapack is about the best value I ever brought on Kindle. It has 15 of the 17 novels in the series. The first two - The Tale of the Witch Doll and The Vanishing Houseboat are omitted for copyright reasons and need to be brought separately (you will want them). Highly recommended. If you liked Penny Parker see The Flash Evans Complete Series MEGAPACK® for two stories about a 16 year old newspaper photographer - a counterpart to Penny's good friend Salt Sommers.

The Penny Parker Megapack 15 Complete Novels edition by Mildred Benson Mildred A Wirt Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Readable with suspense. Considering the heroine is a 17 yr old girl it probably isn't targeted at an adult market. I enjoyed it but at 64 maybe my tastes crave for simpler time. Don't know if a teenage these days would enjoy it. Not a lot of blood or vampire to please I'm afraid
I loved it! I really enjoy reading books written in earlier times -- it gives one a great perspective on the ways people thought and acted. Penny is an excellent role model; she is brave and honest and strong and has an inquiring mind. Although these stories were written for the teen market, I enjoyed them anyway.
I just love reading mystery detective novel of the young innocent people without all the foul language you get with most books. Very good buy for so many books. I tried to read one per day. They really hold my interest form start to end. I hope this helps you to purchase this book. You just can't beat $.99 anytime for a puchase like this.
I love vintage mystery stories and wanted to try these. I had grown up reading the Hardy Boys series in the late 50's. From what I remember, these stories are more sophisticated and older teen - young adult suited. Good humor, good rich characters. Penny Parker gets into all kinds of mysteries and troubles which she tackles with her friends and father. Some slapstick too when the sassy and indomitable Penny falls into a river, swims to shore in her good clothes or wades through water or mud in her good shoes as her adventures progress. These stories seem to give a good glimpse of the simpler, more innocent 1930's to 1940's. Cliffhangers where Penny (often with her chum) get trapped by the bad guys and have to engineer their escape. I enjoyed these stories from the author who wrote most of the Nancy Drew stories under a pen name. A lot of fun reading and cheaper than the Nancy Drew or better remembered stories. Good bang for the buck.
I read a lot of mysteries as a youth, including the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew. Those series were revised starting in the. 1960s, but if you read and enjoyed the originals, you'll love this set. Mildred Benson was the ghost writer for many of the Nancy Drew books, working from outlines sent to her. But the Penny Parker books are all her own. They are a lot like the Nancy Drew books, but in my opinion, even better. They lacked the marketing campaign, which is probably why they are largely forgotten these days.
As a long-time Nancy Drew fan, I was anxious to read another series written by Mildred Wirt Benson, who wrote many of Nancy's adventures, particularly the early ones. I have not yet read all fifteen novels, but I've read the first few in the Penny Parker Megapack. This almost sounds like heresy, but I like the Penny Parker books as well as--and maybe just a little more than--the Nancy Drew books. That's hard to admit for someone who's been a fan and collected Nancy Drew books since childhood. Penny is presented more realistically as a teenager--not perfect and not drop-dead beautiful. She has her strengths and weaknesses but is very likeable. Penny has an inquisitive and adventurous nature that finds an outlet in investigating stories for her father's newspaper. Nancy Drew fans will note several similarities, though, between the two heroines. Like Nancy, Penny is the only daughter of a widowed father who allows his daughter a good bit of freedom to pursue her adventures. Also like Nancy, Penny's mother died when she was quite young, leaving her to be raised with the help of a motherly housekeeper. However, Penny has only one chum, Louise, to share in her escapades, and so far Penny hasn't gone on any dates with boys, though she seems to have a bit of a crush on Jerry Livingston, a young reporter for her dad's newspaper. The books are engaging and fast paced and just plain fun to read. They were written in the 1930's and 1940's, so the books may seem dated to some, but I find that to be part of their appeal. This megapack seems to be well done and is certainly a good value. I recommend it!
